Just as things are looking up...
Oh-so-newly elected president Mwai Kibaki has been hospitalized for a blood clot in his leg. There's been speculation that Kibaki is more figurehead than chief executive, in part because of his age--71. In the US Senate, that's probably the median for junior senators, but the (AIDS ravaged) life expectancy in Kenya is 47.

So how healthy is the figurehead, if that's what he is? Is Kenya ready for another transition of power if he's sick? Are the country's elite ready to pick someone else?
