FanHouse: Fri AM 'A-Rod's 1.21 Gigiwatts' Edition

Scroll on down to the secret of how A-Rod could hit his 493rd home run today, Terry Bowden getting back in the coaching chair, and a horrid European anti-doping anthem. And stop by FanHouse this afternoon for the unveiling of the dirtiest NCAA Football program of the last 20 years.

Have a good weekend.

Sports Media Navel:
Bob Costas Chirps Back at Barry Bonds: "As anyone can plainly see, I'm 5-6½ and a strapping 150, and unlike some people, I came by all of it naturally," Costas said Thursday in a telephone interview.

The Debriefing: Fists Full of SchruteBucks XI: I usually don't give SchruteBucks to writers, but Granderson's column on Page 2 yesterday was so good that I felt like I had to ... especially since it's a point I've tried to make before, and failed.

Tony Kornheiser Goes on Vacation, Washington Post Radio Tanks: Harry Jaffe of the Washingtonian reports that the Washington Post Co. plans to close its radio arm, and Kornheiser leaving was the straw that broke the camel's back.

20 Years Ago Today, Sports Illustrated Featured Pit Bulls on Its Cover: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Falcons general manager Rich McKay have said they didn't even know dog fighting existed until they heard the allegations against Vick. That's odd because there has been plenty of media coverage of dog fighting long before the Vick case, including Sports Illustrated featuring a fighting pit bull on its cover on July 27, 1987 -- 20 years ago today.

WTF?

A Wooga Wooga Woo-gahhh: The Tour Stumbles Home: That's a terrible song about doping in sports, a bit of Euro-pop with a Carlos Santana guitar solo and unfortunate "A WOOGA WOOGA WOOOGAAAHHH" chorus that will stink up your brain for at least the next three hours. You're welcome.

NCAA Football:
Is Terry Bowden Back in the Saddle Again? Orlando radio station WHOO, 1080 AM announced Wednesday that Terry Bowden is leaving his post as co-host of the 'Terry Bowden-Brady Ackerman Show' to move to Tallahassee as an 'observer' of FSU's football program.

Football's Dirtiest Programs: #3, Texas A&M: A&M's appearance in the countdown can likely be attributed to a culture of corruption in College Station that seemed to taper off after the 1988 penalties. Nobody told the boosters about it, though, as they continued to keep the Aggies in hot water almost continually through 1994.

Football's Dirtiest Programs: #2, Oklahoma: Project Intercept was a program which interviewed top prospects in basketball and football, trying to catch violations of NCAA recruiting rules. For all intents and purposes, it was a fishing expedition... and during their fishing in 1985, the NCAA hooked a whopper.

MLB:
A-Rod Hit His 500th (Maybe)! A big tip of the hat goes to Tim Kurkjian who was filling in today for Golic on Mike and Mike in the Morning and gave us this great nugget. Turns out, the home run Alex Rodriguez hit against the Royals in Kansas City on Wednesday may have been his 500th home run, even though it's currently being counted as his 499th. Let me explain.

Jose Canseco Responds to Curt Schilling: Canseco kind of has a point. Schilling had an excellent opportunity to say his peace about steroids and he passed on it, which makes it a little odd that he's so vocal now.

NFL:
Michael Vick Tied to Arizona Dog Breeders, But Not a Person of Interest: It's not clear why Arpaio would say something so inflammatory if it wasn't true, although his office did say the name of another NFL player -- who they wouldn't name -- came up in a dog fighting investigation a few years ago.

Andy Reid's Son Will Serve Jail Time, Albeit A Few Days: The DUI carries a minimum of 3 days in jail with a maximum of thirty days. Garrett Reid seemed to be willing to admit his wrong doings and said he would "take the consequences that have been given to me and that I deserve."

This Could Get Ugly: Marc Bulger Holds Out: Bulger, who was a no-show for a mandatory team meeting and may not report to training camp practice, has the team over a barrel.
